Jack Lewis Baynes
I have to give a little shout out to my friends, Sarah and Tim, that have recently brought home the sweetest little bundle of joy. Meet Jack Lewis Baynes.
He is the cutest baby! And Sarah and Tim are such wonderful, proud parents. Tim likes to point out that Jack is way ahead of schedule, already doing things that a month old can do. It has been so nice to have close friends that are in the same stage of life that we are. I am hoping that Jack and our baby boy will grow up to be great friends and we can take family trips together! And even better, they live like 5 minutes away in the Highlands. Congratulations Sarah and Tim! You will be amazing parents and I can't wait to learn from you!

18 Weeks!
Only two more weeks and I will be halfway there! I am pretty sure that I have been finally feeling some movement of our little guy. For the last few days, I have been feeling a sort of "swishing" motion in my lower belly. It feels like when you are in a pool and someone swipes water at you under water (but doesn't actually touch you). Very subtle but definitely noticeable. My doctor told me if you think you are feeling movement, you probably are. Then, today while working at my desk, I am almost positive I felt a little kick. It definitely wasn't anything I have felt before. I am hoping to feel more little kicks or jabs to confirm my suspicions!
I had my 18 week appointment with my doctor yesterday. Those appointments are always kind of funny. I always have to wait for almost an hour to even see him, even though the appointment was scheduled. I get into the room, they have me pee in a cup, take my blood pressure and then the doctor comes in and pokes around my belly and listens for the heartbeat. He asks if I have any questions and that's it. The whole thing last about 5 minutes. The doctor did say that my uterus is the "perfect size" and everything else looks great. Even though I expected to hear that everything was going well, it's still a relief to hear from the doctor.
You may remember from earlier blog posts that I am Rh- (O- blood type). Well, after my last appointment the doctor ordered that Luke go get his blood typed. It turns out that he is blood type O+. It's a bummer that he has a positive blood type because I will still have to get the shots of RhoGAM, but it turns out that since we both have the blood type "O", the baby is less likely to have jaundice, which is good news.
I am almost done with registering for the baby. We decided to register at Target (which has absolutely everything) and Restoration Hardware (which is just awesome). A big thanks to my co-worker Joanne for all of her registry tips! I have no idea where to start with some items and she has given me some really great advice and recommendations. My mom offered to buy us our crib and we are planning on buying the dream stroller ourselves. I really have to stop myself from buying things now because I am just so excited but I know we will have a few baby showers in the fall and I need to just wait until then.
Luke is out of town until August 6th for work (sad), so I couldn't have him take a picture of the baby bump this morning, but I will try to figure out how to take one on a timer and post it later on.
Our baby is now the size of a sweet potato! He is becoming amazingly mobile (compared to me, at least), passing the hours yawning, hiccupping, rolling, twisting, kicking, punching, sucking, and swallowing. And he is finally big enough that I'll soon be able to feel his movements.

Stroller Love
I want this stroller. BADLY! I joked to Luke that maybe if I buy a baby doll I can get the stroller now and practice. It is going to be my one big splurge for our little guy. It's the Vista stroller by UPPAbaby. It has detachable pieces to it, so in addition to the upright seat and the bassinet shown below, we plan to get a car seat that fits into the stroller as well. So, when baby falls asleep at the zoo, for example, we don't have to wake him to move him into the car.
One of my favorite things about this stroller is that it will grow with our family. Check this out, the smallest kid goes in the back, the toddler in the front and your oldest can stand on the wood pedal in the front. Genius.

Mr. and Mrs. Fix-It
Now, Luke and I have never been known for our handyman skills, that's for sure. Ever since we moved into our condo two years ago, we have had a long list of repairs that we have wanted to make. Some of them were completed quickly (fixing a light fixture in the bathroom, repairing a towel rack). But some projects were larger and more daunting. Almost everyone that has been to our condo knows that we have a problem with the heat. When the breaker for the heat and hot water is on, our heat pumps at full blast, easily getting our condo to 90 degrees. Our thermostat doesn't seem to communicate with the heating unit to turn the heat off or down. So, for the last two years, we have been having to turn the heat of at the breaker. Unfortunately, this also turns off our hot water. Which means anytime we want to shower or do the dishes, we had to turn on the breaker and then turn it off when we are done. Such a pain. But, over the last two years, we have gotten used to it.
The second issue has been a leaky pipe in our utility closet. This week we had a plumber come in and fix the leaks (for a whopping $400!!) and he magically discovered a switch related to our heat. We realized when we switch this off, the heat goes off, but doesn't turn off our hot water. HALLELUJAH! Two birds with one stone. Now, our heat problem is fixed and we have no more leaks!
The last project we plan to tackle is the carpet. The person who lived in our condo before us was a huge slob and the carpet is a total wreck. It is super dirty and has huge stains on it. I simply can't have carpet in that condition with a baby on the way who will be crawling and playing on it. So, in the very near future we will be replacing our carpet.
Nothing like a new baby to shove you into productivity mode! Love it. We feel so handy. Even though we call other people do help us and don't do much ourselves. :)

17 Weeks
17 weeks today! I am feeling great and eating like a monster. Nausea is completely gone, only to be replaced by a ravenous appetite. If I don't eat every few hours, I start to feel faint. Having seconds at dinner has become routine. Everything is going really well except sleeping has become more uncomfortable. Thank God for body pillows. And an understanding husband (since I take up most of the bed). I still haven't felt our little baby boy move but hopefully will soon. I have started registering but I am so compeltely overwhelmed that I don't know where to start. If you have any suggestions of items that you couldn't live without, please let me know! We are going to try to be practical in what we buy and really need to know the necessities.

Our baby is now the size of an onion! His skeleton is hardening, changing from rubbery cartilage to bone, and fat is finally accumulating around it. His umbilical cord is getting thicker and stronger, and those little fingers and toes now feature one-of-a-kind prints. Amazing!

Work Schedule
For those of you that don't already know, I am currently working at Seattle Biomedical Research Institute as a Human Resources Representative. I mostly work with benefits and payroll and I also manage our internship programs. I work a fairly standard 9-5, Monday through Friday work schedule. I have always wanted to work part-time, if at all, when I have a baby. Last week, I had a conversation about returning to work after my maternity leave at only 3 days a week. Thankfully, my boss was incredibly supportive and has agreed to me returning to work Monday - Wednesday and I will be able to work Tuesdays from home. I could not picture a more ideal situation. I am so thankful to have a flexible, understanding boss and a job that will allow me the perfect work/life balance. I am on cloud nine. I couldn't be happier!
